Best Donuts

The Holy Spirit led me to a revelation about Sunday mornings.

I live in a house with three girls, four counting the dog. Six out of seven days begin the same way with me yelling. Sure, we plan for this. The girls set their clothes out the night before. But, inevitably a shoe somehow is raptured not to be found, a hair bow is a fuschia instead of pink, something isn’t signed, or a flat iron might not be unplugged. It begins with me yelling, “It’s time to go.” After a few minutes, it morphs into me dropping the “it’s” and simply yelling, “Time to go” over and over with no hope inflicted in my voice.

Sunday mornings are the worst. Perhaps if the church fired people who were late…

We go to church in a shopping mall.

A few stores down there is a donut shop. (I hope you aren’t one of those people who spell donut-doughnut. That’s just uppity.)

Every week I get the same question, “Dad, can we go to Best Donuts?” The answer was the same week in and week out, “We don’t have time.” That is until the Holy Spirit gave me the words to say.

A month ago, on a Saturday night the girls asked, “Dad, can we go to Best Donuts tomorrow before church?” The Spirit of the Lord came upon me just as He did David when he killed Goliath and I replied, “If we leave the house by 9:00, we can.” The worship service begins at 9:30, so this gave us plenty of time with wiggle room.

The next morning the girls were ready before 8:00! And, they’ve been ready to leave the house by 9:00 every single Sunday since. Look at that grin on my picture! That is the smile of a dad living with three girls who makes it to church on time with at least one glazed donut in his stomach. Straight cheesin’!

Best Donuts is manna from heaven.

However, the name is boring. It looks awful on a business card. If they had a website, it wouldn’t inspire jealousy from a rival donut shop. Best Donuts would look lame screen-printed on a t-shirt even in a hipster font.

The name Best Donuts might not be creative, but it is the truth. They have the best donuts within their four walls. Now, I’m sure you might disagree depending on where you live. But it is the most delicious donut found in the 42141.

There’s so much in a name.

God reveals this in His word. Names mean something important. That’s why at times before someone was born, God told their parents what to name them. Also, Jesus renamed a few people. Simon became Peter and Saul became Paul.

Not only that but you will be given a new name.

“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it” (Revelation 2:17).

You’ll be given a new name written on a stone and a Best Donuts donut one day.

Okay maybe not a donut from Best Donuts, but you will be given a new name. A name revealing something important, true, and chosen for you.

That thought should stop you a moment. Your God not only loves you, but knows you on such an intimate level that He is going to give you a new name.

Because there is so much in a name.
